Paris’ area #4 is on the right bank of the Seine. The Ile Saint Louis results from the joining of Ile de Notre Dame and Ile aux Vaches. The first houses date back to Gallic Period. During the years of Roman Empire the Ile de la Cité was linked to both the banks through two bridges, Petit Pont and Pont Notre Dame. The way of Rue Saint Martin corresponds to one of the main Roman roads. The houses and the Saint Gervais sanctuary on the right bank date back to the 5th century. In the 9th century the Saint Gervais sanctuary was delimited by a fence which maybe was in the nearby of Rue de Rivoli extending to the Seine. From 1990s a still growing homosexual community settled in the municipality area with several bars, restaurants showing off the rainbow flag belonging to the community, especially in Rue des Archives and in the streets around the municipality.
