Victor Hugo lived on the second floor of the Rohan-Guéménée hotel from 1832 to 1848, that’s

where he received Vigny, Lamartine, Béranger, Sainte-Beuve, Dumas, Mérimée, Devéria, Nanteuil, David d’Angers and he wrote some of his main works (Marie Tudor, Ruy Blas, Burgraves, Twilight Songs, Inner Voices, Light and Shadows), a great part of Les misérables and it started The legend of centuries and The contemporaries.
In 1902, year of the centenary of his birth, the museum was created on the initiative of Paul Meurice, thanks to a series of drawings, books and objects that this faithful friend gave to the city of Paris.
The inauguration took place on 30 June 1903.
To the second floor, the visit of the apartment follows the three great stages articulating Victor Hugo’s life: before the exile, the exile, after the exile.
