Created in 1666 by the Prime Minister Colbert, originally real library, it was named national library during the Revolution.
Its patrimony increased thanks to the literary and artistic works coming from the religious congregations and from the nobles expatriated after the revolution.
In 1854 the building was modernized by the architect Labrouste that created the reading room and the imposing central store.
