Bastille square was built after the destruction of the Bastille fortress.
On July, 14th 1789, during the Revolution, the Bastille prison was stormed by Parisian population and it began to be demolished the day after. Recently the building of the Opera Bastille has cheered up that dozing area. The Juillet column commemorates the victims of the revolutionary days of 1830 which caused king Charles X’s downfall. The Opera Bastille is a very imposing and massive building of the late 20th century.
