The July column is a column built on the famous and historically important ground where there was the Bastille fortress, to commemorate the three glory days of July 1830 which caused king Charles X’s downfall and the beginning of Louis-Philippe I’s kingdom – he was the duke of Orléans - (the July monarchy), till the spring of 1848.
Therefore it wasn’t built to commemorate the revolution facts of 1789 (the storming of the Bastille) as it is supposed to be for someone. This place is served by the underground station named Bastille. The plate at the bottom of the column shows the following sentence: “in the memory of those French citizens who armed themselves and fought for freedom during the memorable days of July, 27th, 28th, 29th, 1830”.
